Perhaps the "story ends" perhaps it is already over. From this I conclude the only way to confirm that we are not in a simulation is to destroy all civilization before we reach such computing power. At the same time how do we then know that we didn't all just die and the simulation failed? Yikes, I need more ice cream.
Exactly Seth, how would you ever know? Everything we might think of might have been already been thought of for us.
